May 12th is the designated day for International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases, as per RESCIND (Repeal Existing Stereotypes about Chronic and Immunological Diseases). It was designated in 1993 by Tom Hennessey, the founder of RESCIND. The date was chosen to commemorate the birth of the inspiration for the International Red Cross, Florence Nightingale. Since 1997, the NFA (National Fibromyalgia Association) has taken the lead in spreading awareness of the disease we all love to hate. Nightingale should be an inspiration to everyone suffering with fibromyalgia: in her mid thirties, she contracted a paralyzing illness. Although she was bedridden for the majority of her life afterwards, she managed to coordinate the opening of the first School of Nursing. Such determination shows that anything is possible, despite the circumstances. We can never, ever give up hope that a cure will be found.
